How we rank Rochester auto repair companies

Auto repair is a trust business before it's anything else — you're handing someone your brakes, your engine, and a bill you usually can't independently verify. A single star average doesn't capture that. So every shop in this directory gets a Roc Score built from seven public signals, not one, and we publish the exact weights below so you can check our math against a shop's actual Google and Yelp numbers.

The formula

Roc Score = 30% × Google rating      (normalized 0–5 → 0–1)
          + 20% × Google review count (log-scaled, caps out near 500 reviews)
          + 10% × Yelp rating         (normalized 0–5 → 0–1)
          + 10% × Yelp review count   (log-scaled, same cap)
          +  5% × BBB accreditation   (1 = accredited, 0 = not)
          + 10% × Review recency      (1.0 within 30 days, 0.7 within 90, 0.3 within 365, 0 beyond)
          + 15% × Service-area overlap with our 10 target Rochester suburbs

Result is scaled to 0–100 and displayed as a Roc Score, never as stars.

The log scaling on review counts matters specifically for auto repair, where a shop can go from 20 reviews to 60 in a good year but almost never jumps from 20 to 500 — it means a five-year-old shop with 40 honest reviews isn't buried under a chain quick-lube that happens to process enough car traffic to rack up 800. Displaying the result as a 0–100 Roc Score instead of a star count is also a deliberate choice: Google treats any site-generated star rating as a "self serving" rich-result risk, and we'd rather lose the star snippet than misrepresent what this number is.

Why these seven signals, and why these weights

Google rating + review count (50% combined) — the largest share of the score, because most Rochester drivers search and book through Google Maps first, and Google's review volume for auto shops is typically 5–10× Yelp's in this market. A shop's Google presence is the closest thing to a full sample we have access to.

Yelp rating + review count (20% combined) — a smaller weight, but a real one: Yelp reviewers for auto shops skew toward people who had a billing or diagnostic dispute worth writing about, so a shop with a strong Yelp average alongside a strong Google average has cleared a genuinely different bar than one relying on Google alone.

BBB accreditation (5%)— intentionally modest. Auto repair BBB complaints run heavily toward billing and upsell disputes rather than safety issues, which makes accreditation a real but narrow signal — worth something, not worth as much as a shop's actual review record.

Review recency (10%)— auto shops turn over lead technicians more than most local-service categories, and a 4.8-star average built on reviews from three years ago doesn't tell you who's actually torquing your lug nuts today. Recent reviews get full weight; reviews older than a year get none.

Service-area overlap (15%)— the highest weight after Google's two factors, and higher than it would be for a lot of other local trades. Rochester's suburbs genuinely differ for this category: Pittsford and Brighton have a heavier European-car mix that needs OEM-grade scan tools, Webster and Irondequoit see harder brake-line and undercarriage corrosion from lakefront salt, and Henrietta sees more industrial and fleet-duty vehicles. A shop that explicitly serves your suburb has usually built the parts inventory and diagnostic habits that match what actually breaks there — which is a real, if imperfect, quality signal on top of "can they physically service my car."

Worked example

Three hypothetical Rochester shops, scored on the same seven signals:

Shop B's perfect 5.0 average is the highest raw rating of the three — and it finishes last. Six reviews and two-suburb coverage aren't enough volume or reach to compete with a shop that has real depth across every signal. Shop C beats Shop B decisively despite a lower rating and reviews that are six months stale, because it has more review volume, a second corroborating source in Yelp, BBB accreditation, and roughly half of our target coverage area. This is the whole point of scoring seven signals instead of one: a single great week of five-star reviews can't outrank a shop that's actually built a track record.

Data sources

  • Google Business Profile — rating, review count, and service-area signals
  • Yelp — secondary rating and review-count signal where a shop has a Yelp presence
  • BBB.org — accreditation status and public complaint history
  • NY State business registry — verifies legal entity name and active status
  • New York State DMV Registered Repair Shop records — we note DMV registration status where it's public record, since NY requires shops performing covered repair work to hold a Certificate of Registration
  • Shop's own website — for service menus and published pricing

We refresh business data weekly. If you see something stale — a closed location, a wrong phone number, a shop that's changed hands — email connormeador@gmail.com.

What we DON'T do

  • Pay-for-placement — no shop pays to rank higher, and there's no "featured listing" tier that skips the formula
  • Reciprocal-link schemes — no "link to us, we'll link to you"
  • Scraped review text — we link to original sources, we don't republish verbatim reviews
  • Fabricated certifications — only credentials we can verify (ASE, factory training, AAA/NAPA affiliation) get mentioned
  • Treating a low BBB complaint count as proof of clean billing — most billing disputes never reach the BBB, so we weight it accordingly (5%, not 25%)
  • AI-generated "sample of their work" images tied to specific shops
