Who built this — and why Rochester auto repair needed an honest directory

Why a mechanic directory, specifically: I'm Connor Meador, a Rochester, NY developer, and this is the auto-repair entry in a small network of Monroe County local-service directories I've been building since 2023 — pool service, chimney sweeps, HVAC, and now mechanics. Auto repair earned its own site because the information gap here is bigger than most: a bad plumber costs you a callback, but a bad mechanic can hand you back a car with a brake job that wasn't actually done, or an unnecessary $1,200 “transmission service” you didn't need. What's actually broken about “mechanic near me” searches: Search “mechanic near me Rochester” and the results are dominated by whichever quick-lube chain bought the ad slot and whichever shop happens to have the most Google reviews regardless of how recent they are — a shop that earned 300 five-star reviews under a technician who left two years ago still shows up looking great. Neither signal tells you who's good right now, who does honest diagnostic work instead of parts-cannon guessing, or who's actually equipped to service your specific car — a BMW needs different tooling than a Silverado. ROC Mechanic exists to separate those things out.

How the Roc Score actually works: Every shop gets a 0–100 Roc Score built from Google rating and review volume (50% combined, log-scaled so a chain with 800 reviews doesn't automatically bury a 40-review independent), Yelp rating and volume (20% combined — Yelp skews toward people with a billing dispute worth writing about, so it's a genuinely different check than Google), BBB accreditation (5%, deliberately small since most auto-repair billing disputes never reach the BBB), how recently the shop's reviews were written (10% — technicians turn over, and a shop's 2021 reputation isn't its 2026 reputation), and how much of our 10-suburb Rochester coverage area the shop actually serves (15%, the second-highest weight, because Pittsford's European-car mix, Webster's salt-corroded brake lines, and Henrietta's fleet-duty trucks each reward different shop specialties). Nobody buys their way up: Zero shops pay for placement, a better score, or preferential editorial treatment — there is no paid tier that skips the Roc Score. If a shop owner emails me about a factual error (wrong phone number, closed location, wrong service list), I fix it within 48 hours. They cannot email me about their ranking, because the ranking isn't mine to change — it's whatever the formula outputs from public Google, Yelp, and BBB data that week.

Where the data comes from: Shop names, addresses, and service areas are cross-referenced from OpenStreetMap business records and Google Places public profiles. Ratings come from Google Maps and Yelp public listings — numeric aggregates only, never verbatim review text. BBB accreditation is pulled from BBB.org public profiles, and where it's public record, I note New York State DMV Registered Repair Shop status, since covered repair shops in NY are required to hold a Certificate of Registration. I don't scrape or republish protected content from any platform.

Rochester coverage, and why it's not generic: ROC Mechanic tracks shops across 10 Greater Rochester suburbs — Pittsford, Penfield, Webster, Brighton, Fairport, Greece, Henrietta, Irondequoit, East Rochester, and Chili — and each suburb page reflects real vehicle-condition differences, not a copy-pasted template: lakefront salt eating undercarriages and brake lines in Webster and Irondequoit, a heavier European-car population needing OEM-grade diagnostic tools in Pittsford and Brighton, and harder-duty pickup and fleet traffic in Henrietta and Chili. A shop's Roc Score already accounts for which of these it actually serves — the suburb pages just make that visible.

• Public data only — no scraped review text, no republished proprietary content.
• Every listing cites at least one public source (Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB, or NY DMV registration where applicable).
• No fabricated ASE, factory-training, or AAA/NAPA claims — only credentials I can verify get mentioned.
• Removal requests are honored within 7 days, no questions asked.
• Site-wide pricing ranges (oil changes, brakes, diagnostics) are Monroe County market references, not quotes from any specific shop.
