Who built this — and why Rochester auto repair needed an honest directory

Who I am: My name is Connor Meador. I'm a Rochester, NY-based developer who has been building local-service directories for Monroe County since 2023. I live here. My cars get serviced here. I got burned by an upsell at a dealer once too many times, and I started tracking which independent shops actually back up their work — and which ones just have a good website. This directory is built & maintained by Roc Web Tech — Rochester web design & AI automation.

The problem I set out to solve: When you search “mechanic near me Rochester”, the top 3 Google results are usually national chains, paid ads, or generic Yelp category pages. The actual best independent shops — the ones Rochesterians recommend on NextDoor — are buried on page 2. ROC Mechanic is my attempt to fix that by building a ranked directory that prioritizes verified review volume and recency over ad spend.

The Roc Score formula: Every shop is assigned a Roc Score (0–100) that combines seven public signals: Google star rating (30%), Google review count log-normalized (20%), Yelp rating (10%), Yelp review count (10%), BBB accreditation (5%), review recency within 90 days (10%), and service-area coverage across Greater Rochester suburbs (15%). The Bayesian log-normalization on review counts prevents a shop with five 5-star reviews from outranking an established operator with 200 reviews at 4.7 stars. Rankings update weekly.

No pay-for-placement — ever: I do not accept fees from businesses to improve their ranking, appear higher in search results, or receive better editorial treatment. The order you see on this site is purely algorithmic, sourced from public data. A shop owner can contact me to correct factual errors in their listing (wrong phone number, closed location), and I will fix those within 48 hours. They cannot pay to change their score.

Transparent data sources: Business names, addresses, and service areas are cross-referenced from OpenStreetMap (OSM) business records and Google Places public profiles. Star ratings are sourced from Google Maps and Yelp public listings — numeric aggregates only, never verbatim review text. BBB accreditation is pulled from BBB.org public business profiles. I do not scrape, republish, or redistribute protected proprietary content from any platform.

Rochester coverage: ROC Mechanic tracks shops serving 10 Greater Rochester suburbs: Pittsford, Penfield, Webster, Brighton, Fairport, Greece, Henrietta, Irondequoit, East Rochester, and Chili. Each suburb has its own page noting local vehicle conditions — lake-effect undercarriage rust in Webster and Irondequoit, European-car density in Pittsford, heavy-truck volume in Henrietta. Rankings within each suburb reflect the same Roc Score algorithm weighted for that suburb's service-area overlap.

Editorial standards

  • Public data only — I never scrape user-written reviews or republish proprietary content.
  • Every business entry has at least one cited source (Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB).
  • No fabricated certifications, invented founding dates, or made-up testimonials.
  • If a business asks to be removed, I remove them within 7 days — no questions asked.
  • Pricing ranges shown site-wide are general market references sourced from Monroe County shops — not quotes from any specific business.
